Northern Flicker Romance

Mr or Mrs Northern Flicker of Ramada Dr.
I’m not sure if this is the male or the female. The male has a red mustache but I can’t see his front here. He or she as the case may be spent the better part of 2 days enlarging that hole that you can see to your left. I thought it was a hollow column on our front porch but I guess not as they seem to come and go easily after carefully cleaning out a nest that some birds carelessly left from last year and then building their own.
Instead of the rapid stuttering of the beak against some hard object which we are used to hearing when the male is looking for a girl friend, we heard the fairly steady tap-tap of a nesting craftsbird. I hope to get a picture of the two of them together but that may be difficult to do.
