And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, “Truly, this was the Son of God!”

Chrism Mass at Billings’ St Patrick’s Co-Cathedral

Last Monday evening the faithful of St Patrick’s Co-Cathedral and surrounding churches gathered for Bishop Warfel to consecrate the oils to be used for the various anointings during the coming year.

Wikipedia has some nice pictures and summary of these practices not only in Roman Catholicism, but in Eastern Christianity, some Protestant groups, including the folks from the Church of Latter Day Saints, and Gnostic Christians. Are there any of these last still around? The picture above is from the narthex of St Patrick’s Co-Cathedral before the Monday evening mass.

High Plains Chamber Singers: High notes and low

The High Plains Chamber Singers, twenty-two of them, filled St Patrick’s Co-Cathedral here in Billings last night with remarkable sound. There was a little of this and a little of that: sacred and secular, traditional and old, new and bright, all full of life. The climax came with a percussive piano employing four hands and a very full and lusty-voiced choir. Faces matched sound in the choir as well as in the audience.

The place was almost as full as it is at Christmas Midnight Mass. Sorry, I lost my program so I don’t have any names other than the brilliant young Rocky Mountain College professor, Steven Hart, who leads this group. They lay it all on the line two or three times per year. What a great gift to the community.

Keep your eyes open for their next performance probably some time next Spring, if that ever comes.

Spirit Visits Saint Patrick’s Co-Cathedral

Lots of things going on at St Pat’s Co-Cathedral this past weekend. In addition to the usual masses and other sacramental happenings, Bishop Michael Warfel joined us for the Rites of Sending and Election with the RCIA people of this part of the diocese. The picture to the left is from the narthex looking toward the altar with the baptismal font directly in front of you.

And we were graced by the presence of Fathers Nigro and Beuzer, right and left below, who led a very well-received Lenten retreat. That picture to the left is the marvelous recent stained glass addition to the narthex: The Tree of Life.

Even with the best stories in the world we still need to tell them well. These guys reminded us how to do this extremely well.

Ash Wednesday

The first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar, and forty-six days before Easter. Ash Wednesday, being dependent on the celebration of Easter, can occur as early as February 4th or as late as March 10th. See the Wikipedia entry.

Noon mass at St Patrick’s was crowded, even the balcony was fairly full, more than Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
